20 Reasons to Celebrate in October

20-october-holidays

There seems to be an unusual amount of obscure holidays in October, so I’ve weeded out the crazy ones (I mean, who celebrates Moldy Cheese Day or Pet Obesity Awareness Day?!) and given you the highlights.

This October is the 9th annual Fair Trade Month. Throughout the month, ethically-minded consumers, retailers and brands will unite to promote buying and using socially and commercially sustainable, fair trade products in place of commodities which may harm the environment, the economy, communities and disadvantaged individuals.

For example, coffee is often used as a symbol of the fair trade movement because it is the second highest traded commodity in the world, second only to oil. But, did you know, coffee farmers, if they are lucky, receive $.23 per kilo for their beans? It is more often than not that farmers receive closer to $.08 per kilo.

A kilo produces 80 cups of coffee. The average price for a cup of coffee in the States is $2.90. It seems like if we can afford the $4 and $5 coffee drink of choice each morning, we can afford to pay farmers better. This is what fair trade is about. Paying fair wages to those farmers so they can have a higher quality of life. You can learn more here.
